Doctors said a few injections could take years away.Wrinkle fillers are starting to catch up to Botox, which was the most popular cosmetic procedure in 2004.There are different products for different situations.
"These liquid facelifts generally are soft-tissue fillers. There are some that you inject deep, like for cheek fullness, and there are others that you inject just under the skin for lines around the mouth," said Dr. Henry Mentz, a Houston plastic surgeon.Mentz said it's a good product for younger patients who are not ready for a surgical facelift.
"I always wanted to do something about these lines in my face," said Shelley Schefler, a patient. A few injections in some key areas filled in the wrinkles.
But how long will it last? "Some patients, for example, with Restylane -- after two or three months it seems like it's all gone. And there's some patients that seem like they get eight to 12 months out of it. It has something to do with the immune system and maybe their health as well," Mentz said.
Some still worry about what is being injected into their faces. So, Mentz is involved in studies to get a new procedure approved by the Food and Drug Administration called Isolagen.
"It's a process by which you can take some skin, from let's say behind a patient's ear and you extract the fiber blasts. Now the fiber blasts are the cells that make collagen," Mentz said. Then, they are harvested in a lab and used as a concentration of a patient's own collagen-producing cells to inject in the wrinkle.
