Houston TV interviews Dr. Mentz on recent improvements in his abdominal etching and pectoral etching techniques

Men go under the knife for chiseled bodies

05:29 PM CST on Monday, November 29, 2004

By Shern-Min Chow / 11 News

check the video on www.khou.com and search Dr. Mentz

Last year more than a million men in America had cosmetic procedures done.

KHOU-TV

Dr. Mentz prepares his patient for the procedure.

The fourth most popular surgery was reducing enlarged breasts.

Enlarged breasts can affect one in every three men, often caused by obesity, steroids or marijuana.

There are some new techniques that can give some guys a whole new look.

To some, the "Batman look" is the ideal or idealized male physique.

"When I got to my rock bottom, I weighed just under 130 pounds, 5 feet 9 inches," said a patient to be referred to as "Alex."

Alex was nowhere near that several years ago. Addiction problems had eaten into his body.

Today the 28-year-old can work out twice a day, but still wants his chest etched and is willing to suffer all the indignities.

"The fluid drains out afterwards so I basically wear a giant maxi pad around me. I'm not kidding," Alex said.

A few years ago Dr. Henry Mentz pioneered abdominal etching and will do that along with the new pectoral sculpting.

"Most patients aren't nearly as fit as Alex," said Dr. Henry Mentz, plastic surgeon.

One man taped down his chest for years. Some refuse to take their shirts off in public and at home.

"He'd never taken his shirt of for anyone," Dr. Mentz said. "Even his wife had to turn the light off."

Aggressive liposuction defines the chest, and breast tissue is removed through a tiny puncture, versus the traditional larger incision along the areola, which leaves a scar.

A week later, Alex got his post-op check up.

The technique is about a year old and has been presented at medical conferences in half a dozen countries.

"We've done maybe 30," said Dr. Mentz.

It's expensive, costing roughly $6,300 dollars and takes about six months to really see results. Still, Dr. Mentz now does the procedure about three times a week.

"Looks like batman," Dr. Mentz said of his patient. And that suits Alex just fine.
