The Goals of a Necklift Procedure

Like the face, the neck is one of the first areas of the body to show the most visible effects of aging due to sun exposure and laxity of the skin and its underlying muscles. Over time, the neck begins to sag and develop creases, and excess fat often accumulates in this area, as well. In a necklift procedure, the muscles of the neck are tightened, tissues are repositioned, and excess skin and fat are removed to restore a youthful, well-defined contour to the neck and and jawline.

Liposuction of the Neck

If your skin is relatively smooth and firm, but you have an accumulation of excess fatty deposits beneath your chin and /or along your jawline, liposuction may be all that is needed to restore a smooth, defined contour to this area. In this procedure, Dr. Mentz uses a thin hollow cannula tube to suction out fat through small incisions made on the underside of the chin or in the crease around the earlobe. Removal of this excess fat diminishes the appearance of a double chin and restores a firmer, chiseled angle to the neck and jawline.

Dr. Mentz's introduced his innovative and effective facelifting techniques to the Texas Society of Plastic Surgery in 2008. Using a systematic method that is custom-designed to each individual, Dr. Mentz accurately measures, grades, and records the amount of aging or laxity in each area of the face to determine the facelift method that will achieve the most effective results for a patient.

Through computer imaging and the consultation process, the various methods, which include the mini facelift, MAC lift, deep layer, multilayer, and SMAS facelift, can be demonstrated on the patient's image to evaluate the best options. Dr. Mentz has consistently found that three options can be determined for each patient, and, of these, one will most effectively maximize the rejuvenating results that can be achieved.

The Necklift Procedure

In a necklift procedure small incisions are commonly placed on the underside of the chin or around the earlobes. Following liposuction to remove any excess fatty deposits, Dr. Mentz tightens and suspends the underlying muscles, and he repositions the tissues. After trimming away excess skin, the skin is then redraped, lifted, and sutured into place. The length of surgery varies between 1-4 hours, depending on whether a neck lift is performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction and/or a facelift. Dr. Mentz performs the surgery at his private AAAASF-certified SurgiCentre in Houston, Texas.

Necklift Recovery

Recovery time for a necklift varies depending on the number of procedures that are performed. If a necklift is combined with facelift surgery, you will stay overnight in one our recovery suites where you will be cared for by one of our highly-trained registered nurses. As part of our exclusive "Added Touch" services, Dr. Mentz may recommend a home visit by a plastic surgery nurse who is trained to assist you with your recovery. The nurse will monitor your recovery, change any dressings, assist you with your medication, and provide Dr. Mentz with an update on your condition.

Stitches are removed in about a week, and most bruising fades in two weeks. Most patients can return to work in one week and resume exercise in 4-6 weeks, depending on the doctor's recommendations.
