At his Houston practice, triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Henry Mentz uses tumescent liposuction to help patients sculpt areas of the face and body, including the buttocks, stomach, thighs, hips, breasts, back, arms, and neck. Liposuction is best for patients who are at or near a healthy, stable weight, but still have some pockets of fat they cannot eliminate naturally.

Surgical Technique

In the liposuction procedure, a sterile solution containing anesthetic (to reduce pain) and epinephrine (to minimize bleeding and bruising) is injected into the areas of localized fatty deposits. Through small incisions, a thin hollow tube called a cannula is used to suction out the unwanted fat. To minimize scarring, these incisions are typically no more than one-quarter of an inch in length, and they are placed in inconspicuous areas such as natural skin folds and creases.

Recovery

Recovery can range from 5-7 days for liposuction. Patients will wear a compression garment for the first 6 weeks after their surgery to reduce swelling and bruising as well as to promote proper healing of the underlying tissues. Dr. Mentz will discuss any other specific recovery instructions or recommendations during the consultation and before the patient’s discharge.

FAQ

Tumescent Lipo?

In the tumescent method of liposuction, a fluid containing anesthetic and other medicines is injected into the tissues, causing the fat to swell, so that it can be more easily sculpted to create the desires contours. Because the fluid reduces blood flow to the area which is being liposuctioned, bleeding and bruising are reduced. In addition to advantages during surgery, patients experience a more comfortable recovery in the 18-24 hours following their procedure because of the pain-relieving anesthetic contained in the tumescent solution.

Skin Elasticity?

Since liposuction only removes fat, it does not remove excess skin, patients should have good skin elasticity to get their best results. If their skin is already loose or sagging, a lift surgery may be added to the liposuction for your best results.

Persistent Results?

While the fat cells removed during liposuction are persistently removed, you can still get fat if you don’t maintain a healthy, stable weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise after your surgery. The fat cells that do remain will become larger with an unhealthy lifestyle, so patients will be able to gain weight.
