What is a Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation can be achieved with dermal fillers or fat grafting, and this term can also refer to surgical implants that provide a more prominent and youthful fullness to cheeks that are flat or concave.

With age, the face loses the fat that keeps it looking smooth and supple. Our Houston, TX cheek augmentation has the ability to deliver a healthy, more contoured appearance to the cheeks and the face overall.

Dr. Mentz’s Surgical Technique for Cheek Augmentation

To give the cheeks a look that appears more naturally sculpted and full, Dr. Mentz prefers to restore volume to this area through the use of either cosmetic dermal fillers or cell-enriched fat grafting. If fat grafting is the chosen method, he will use fat that has been liposuctioned from another area of the body and inject it into the cheeks to re-sculpt their appearance.

Cheek implants may also be used. In order to minimize the appearance of scarring Dr. Mentz makes incisions in areas of the face where they either won’t be visible, or where they’ll blend into the skin well. Cheek implants can be inserted through incisions in the mouth or around the eyes.

Cheek Augmentation Options

Implants

Cheek implants can help create a more youthful, sculpted appearance in the midface, reversing the aging process. There are multiple types of implants to choose from (malar, submalar, and malar/submalar) along with a variety of shapes and sizes to suit every individual. While most implants are made with silicone, polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene are sometimes used as well.

Fillers

Dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft add plumpness and fullness to the cheeks without the need for invasive surgery, scarring, or downtime. Cheek fillers are typically made with hyaluronic acid, a biocompatible compound that binds to water, hydrating and rejuvenating the skin from within.

Fat Transfer

During fat transfer, fat cells are harvested from an area such as the belly, thighs, or hips via liposuction. Once the fat has been purified and sterilized, it is injected into the cheeks to achieve a more youthful, elevated appearance. A fat transfer procedure provides the added benefit of sculpting and reshaping the donor regions.

Is a Cheek Augmentation Right for you?

Good candidates for facial implants are unhappy with their features and the appearance of the midface and cheeks. They wish to enhance facial symmetry, and restore a more youthful look in the mid and lower face.

Being a good candidate doesn’t end with a desire for change, however. Patients must be non-smokers of sound mind and body who are not currently dealing with any significant health issues such as hypertension or a bleeding disorder that would compromise their treatment or its recovery. Lastly, it’s important that clients have realistic goals for their surgery, as discussed in detail during their private consultation.

Candidates for Cheek Augmentation

If you’re considering our Houston, TX cheek augmentation, it’s important to understand that the best candidates for this treatment are those:

  • Whose face and skull have fully matured
  • Who are unhappy with their flat or concave cheeks
  • Feel that their weak cheek structure makes them appear unhealthy or aged
  • Have experience volume loss in the cheeks due to age
  • Want a youthful, healthy-looking contour for the cheeks

What to Expect During your Surgery

Cheek enhancement is performed on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia, as decided upon during your private consultation. Patients will be able to return home the same day as their surgery.

Incisions are made on the insides of the mouth. The cheek implants are carefully sized and shaped to reflect the best fit for your unique anatomy and goals. Once they are in place, Dr. Mentz will close the wounds with fine sutures and place bandages across the area to help reduce swelling.

Recovery

Patients will have mild to moderate bruising and discomfort for 1 to 2 days after their surgery as they follow a liquid-only diet. Dr. Mentz will give each patient specific instructions based on their surgery, but it may include antibiotics, drains, and compression garments. Most patients will need 1 to 2 weeks before they can return to normal activities, and 6 to 8 weeks before exercise can be resumed. If cosmetic dermal fillers are used, there is typically no recovery time.

Is there Visible Scarring After a Cheek Augmentation?

If your cheek augmentation is done using dermal fillers or fat transfer, there are no facial incisions, so there is no scarring. However, the area where the fat was harvested from may have a very tiny scar, about the size of a freckle. This scar usually fades quickly.

If your cheek augmentation is done using implants, there will be very minimal, if any, visible scarring. The incisions for cheek implants are also very small and are made inside the mouth, near the gumline. In some cases, the incisions are inside the lower eyelid.
