To help you achieve the best results, Dr. Mentz will consider your unique physical proportions, aesthetic goals, and your lifestyle in determining the right implant size and profile for you. During your consultation with Dr. Mentz, you will have the opportunity to try on implants of varying sizes in order to help you visualize and choose the look you desire.

While breast augmentation increases the volume and projection of breasts, it does not significantly lift breasts that are sagging. For that reason, many women who desire added volume and correction of drooping breasts choose to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift procedure.

Surgical Technique

During the 1-hour augmentation procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Mentz places the breast implants either above or below the chest muscle through approximately 3/4 inch incisions that are made in the breast crease or the areola edge. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone material that is similar in texture to breast tissue, while the saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater to the size you desire after they have been placed in the breast. The incisions will be closed with dissolvable sutures that do not have to be removed because of their placement under the skin and the incision is covered with a steri-strip for 2 weeks.

Dr Mentz is a great doctor! He really took his time and made specific adjustments to the muscle to make my breast augmentation turn out beautiful. Thank you!!!

Recovery

Once you have returned home, you will wear a sports bra for 4 weeks to provide the breasts with support during the healing period. If you live within 20 miles of our facility, Dr. Mentz can send a nurse to visit your home to assist you with your recovery, including dressings changes, medication assistance, and the nurse will be able to provide Dr. Mentz with an update on your condition.

Your breasts may be swollen for a few days, but Dr. Mentz will prescribe pain medication to relieve any discomfort. Most women can return to work in 1 week and resume exercise in about 1 month, or with Dr. Mentz’s approval. We will teach you how to massage your breasts at your 1 week follow up and you will continue to massage over the next 3 months.

Silicone Implants?

Breast augmentation creates fuller breasts through the placement of either silicone or saline-filled implants in the breasts. Each type of implant has certain advantages to take into consideration when making your choice of implant. Many women and physicians prefer the silicone implants because the silicone gel contained within its solid silicone rubber outer shell is similar in texture to breast tissue which, they feel, translates to a more natural feel and appearance in the breasts. The FDA recommends that women who have silicone implants undergo an MRI every other year after the third year to detect any possible leaks that may have occurred. To provide the public with more comprehensive information about implants, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons created the website, breastimplantsafety.org, where you can find information about implant options; frequently asked questions; and safety, risks, and benefits.

Saline Implants?

Saline also has a solid silicone shell that is made of rubber, but it is filled with sterile saline water once it is implanted into the breast. Any leaking that might occur in a saline implant is usually quickly apparent because the implant deflates, whereas, silicone ruptures can easily go unnoticed since the silicone tends to leak more slowly into surrounding tissues, and the breast changes little in appearance.

Percutaneous Implant Deflation

Percutaneous implant deflation is the process by which saline solution can be extracted from the implants thus enabling the skin tissue to shrink some and for the breast pocket to strengthen over the course of about 4 weeks. During this time, you and Dr. Mentz will review your aesthetic goals and prepare for the removal of the saline bag and placement of a new set of implants. This technique is helpful for patients who want to achieve any of the following: implant exchange to a different size, switch to silicone, improve breasts that displace laterally when laying down, and for some patients who are borderline lifts.

Deflation is done in the comfort of our office. A small amount oflidocaine is injected at the breast crease to numb and then a small catheter is inserted to remove the saline from the implant. A Band-Aid is placed after and you will wear a sports bra of your choice over the next couple of weeks to help aid in tissue tightening. Patients go home immediately after deHation and can resume normal activity the same day.

Why Dr. Mentz

As the nation’s first triple board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Henry Mentz is respected nationwide for his introduction of innovative breast enhancement, facial rejuvenation, and body contouring techniques. He received the unique and valuable privilege to train with the inventors of breast implants, an experience which provided him with insights into managing the various facets and potential complexities of breast augmentation surgery.

In collaboration with his colleagues at The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery in Houston, Texas, Dr. Mentz developed an innovative new technique to improve the results and safety of combining breast augmentation with breast lift surgery.

To diminish the shoulder grooves created by tight bra straps, a characteristic that women with large breasts commonly experience, Dr. Mentz introduced a fat grafting technique to fill in the indentions so that strapless dresses, tops, and swimsuits can be worn more confidently. The Ideal Breast Implant is currently being studied in clinical trials to determine whether it will gain approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration. This implant combines what are considered to be the best respective features of saline and silicone implants. Consisting of a series of implant shells that are nested together, this saline-filled implant was designed to mimic the natural look and feel of silicone implants. Dr. Mentz was one of a select group of surgeons chosen to participate in clinical trials based upon his experience and his excellence as a surgeon.
