Skin care specialist at triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Mentz’s Houston MedSpa uses two of the most popular lasers, the Candela 1064 Gentle: YAG and the IPL 650-1200 nm hand piece to remove hair facial and body hair from areas such as the upper lip, underarms, back, chest, and legs, and bikini area.

The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) reduces hair by using the heat energy produced from light to target and destroy hair follicles. It, too, is appropriate for all skin tones. Because IPL’s light pulses occur quickly, it is considered less painful than hair removal performed by some other lasers, and therefore ideal for larger-scale hair reduction.

Procedure Technique

The Candela may require the use of a numbing cream, but its method of hair removal is considered highly effective because it targets not only the hair shaft, but also the blood supply that nourishes the shaft. Though you might experience some redness in treated areas, laser hair reduction requires no down time, so that work and other activities can be resumed afterwards. To target the reduction of all hair in its different growth cycles, several treatment sessions will be necessary.

The doctor took time to answer questions and explain my recovery to me. I felt reassured all is normal after the appointment.

FAQ

Recovery?

Immediately after the laser hair removal treatment, patients can resume their normal activities. Some patients may see redness in the treated area for up to a few hours. After the treatment, patients should avoid sun and heat exposure for at least 2 weeks. Additionally, patients should not bleach, pluck, or wax any hairs in the treated areas for 4-6 weeks.

Safety?

Laser hair removal treatments have been used for many years and are considered very safe. However, patients should be honest during their consultation about their medical history, current conditions, and current medications.

Pain and Discomfort?

Thanks to Candela’s unique system, most patients feel little to no pain and discomfort during their laser hair removal treatment. Candela includes a Dynamic Cooling Device™ that cools the upper layer of skin just before the laser pulse.

Number of Treatments?

The number of treatments a patient will need for their best results varies based on their needs and goals. Each treatment reduces the number of active hair follicles, but the patient’s hair color, hair type, treatment area, and skin tone will all influence the effectiveness of the treatment.
