How breast fat grafting works

Fat is an excellent material for breast enhancement, as it’s soft and natural, and it does not require any maintenance once the recovery period is complete. Using liposuction, breast fat grafting takes healthy fat from a part of the body where there’s a little extra — usually the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. This fat is then purified and processed, and is then injected into the breast area to add natural-looking volume.

Key benefits of breast fat grafting

  • The most minimal scarring: With breast fat grafting, only very tiny incisions are used.

  • 100% natural: Because nothing is used except fat from the patient’s own body, there’s no risk of allergic reaction. In addition, the results look and feel beautifully natural.
  • No implant, no complications: Breast implants can result in issues such as rupture, rippling, displacement, or discomfort. This does not occur with breast fat grafting.

  • Fat removal: Not only does breast fat grafting enhance breast size; patients also have unwanted fat removed from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, hips, or thighs.

What happens during the procedure?

The breast fat grafting procedure begins with liposuction, which can be performed with the patient either under general or local anesthesia. Tiny incisions will be made near the area where fat is to be taken. Through these small incisions, the doctor will insert a cannula (a long, hollow tube) to loosen the fat and suction it out of the body so that it can be processed and used to volumize the breasts.

Once if the fat is purified, it’s placed within a syringe to be injected to the breasts, typically increasing them by one cup size. For those considering breast fat grafting, it’s important to be aware that you may need multiple sessions to achieve the results you want. This is because with any type of fat grafting, some of the fat may not survive in its new location. Usually about 50% to 70% of the fat survives.

Recovery and results

The majority of breast fat grafting patients only require 1 to 3 days of recovery time. You may need to wear a compression garment for approximately one week (this will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Mentz). You may experience swelling and/or tenderness for a few weeks. Early results will be immediately apparent, with final results visible at 5 to 6 months.
