What is a Primary Facelift?

A primary facelift is a customized facelift procedure that involves a three-layer technique to refresh and renew the facial appearance, taking years off the face and restoring defined, elegant lines. During a primary facelift, Dr. Menz will carefully remove excess, loose facial skin and tighten the deeper muscles and tissues. A primary facelift procedure achieves long-lasting, natural-looking results, sculpting the jawline and cheekbones to recapture the firmer, refined and contoured appearance of your youth.

Dr. Mentz’s Surgical Technique for Facelift

Dr. Mentz performs facelift surgery at his AAAASF-certified SurgiCentre facility in Houston under the supervision of a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure takes several hours to complete. Dr. Mentz will make incisions that allow him to separate the skin from the underlying fat, muscles, and soft tissues. Usually these incisions begin in the hairline at the temples and continue around the ear, ending in the lower scalp.

Through these incisions, he will use a three-layer technique to remove excess facial skin and tighten the deeper muscles and soft tissues to achieve long-lasting, natural-looking results. In some cases, liposuction of the neck and jowls may also be performed to reduce fatty deposits. The skin is then re-draped and smoothed over the new contours, and sutures are also used to close the incisions. Once healed, any scarring is typically well-hidden within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ears.

Over 30 years in practice, Dr. Mentz is not only an internationally respected plastic surgeon; he’s also one of the leading experts in aesthetic plastic surgery. With a triple board certification in Plastic Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, and Head and Neck Surgery, you can be assured that you’re in excellent hands.

With a specialized knowledge in nutrition and holistic medicine, skin biochemistry, pharmacology, and modern plastic surgical techniques, Dr. Mentz’s works with the mission of performing the best facelift surgery that minimizes risk, maximizes results, and provides the most optimal possible outcome and experience for you.

FAQ

What is the average age to get a facelift?

Recovery

Directly after your facelift, a special cooling mask will be placed on your skin to help minimize bruising and swelling. In addition, small tubes may be inserted beneath the skin to prevent fluid accumulation.

If necessary, Dr. Mentz may recommend an overnight stay at one of his SurgiCentre’s recovery suites, where you will be cared for by a highly trained registered nurse who specializes in plastic surgery recovery. Moreover, if you live within 20 miles of our facility, Dr. Mentz will offer a visit to your home by a nurse who is trained to assist you with post-operative recovery. The nurse will change any dressings, monitor your recovery, assist you with your medication, and provide Dr. Mentz with an update on your consultation. This is part of Dr. Mentz’s signature concierge surgical and recovery experience.

Most sutures are removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. Peak swelling takes place within 24 to 48 hours, with moderate swelling may lasting for weeks. We recommend elevation of the head (even during sleep) to reduce initial swelling. Bruising typically subsides within two weeks. Patients are typically able to return to work in two weeks, and resume exercise and other strenuous activities in about six weeks.

What to Expect After Facelift Surgery

  • 1-3 weeks: potentially large amounts of bruising, swelling, and asymmetry.
    • If eyelids are involved then temporary blurry vision and need for eye care should be expected.
    • Rhinoplasty: swelling that fluctuates for several months post-op.
  • 3-4 months: tightness and numbness which indicate positive healing.
  • 5-6 months: patients begin to see what the final results will look like and continue up to 1 year.
  • Throughout the healing process, we utilize minor in-office treatments to speed up or enhance the recovery process.

Candidates for facelift surgery

If you’re in the Houston area and you’re interested in a facelift, it may be the perfect procedure for your goals. The typical facelift patient is between 40 and 70 and is unhappy with his or her signs of facial aging. The best candidates for this surgery are those who:

  • Have minimal to moderate excess skin in the neck, jowls, and mid-face
  • Have deep creases along the nose that extend to the corners of the mouth
  • Have deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Have loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin which can cause the appearance of a double chin
  • Are in general good health
  • Have good bone structure of the face and has lost some (but not all) skin elasticity
  • Are non-smokers, or are willing to stop smoking before surgery
  • Have realistic expectations for what a facelift can accomplish
  • Fully understand the risks and benefits of facelift surgery
  • Are able to take up to two weeks off of work and responsibilities to properly recover

Dr. Mentz is an amazing surgeon who has completely transformed me back to my younger self, and I cannot be more pleased. Anyone considering a facelift should have complete faith in entrusting him to making you your better self.

Facelift Procedures

Besides a primary facelift, Dr. Mentz performs a variety of other facelift techniques:

Mini Facelift

Also known as the “weekend facelift”, this method is ideal for patients with skin laxity but mild deep tissue sagging. This facelift only lifts and tightens the exterior skin layer.

Lower Facelift

This facelift focuses on the nasolabial lines, jawline, submental area, and the neck to improve lines and wrinkles, soften creases around the mouth, and to tighten and sculpt the loose skin of the jawline and jowls.

SMAS Facelift

The SMAS facelift or the “two-layer facelift” is the most extensive, and provides the best results for patients with extreme skin laxity and soft-tissue descent.

Revision Facelift

A revision facelift is done to either touch up a facelift that was performed over a decade ago, or to correct mistakes that were made during the first facelift surgery.

Non-Surgical Facelift

Surgery isn’t always necessary to get the facial rejuvenation results wanted. A non-surgical facelift uses neuromodulators such as Botox®, dermal fillers, and/or fat grafting to achieve significant improvements.

How the Face Ages

As the years go by, our collagen and elastin (which provides the skin with firmness and elasticity) begin to degrade, resulting in the development of wrinkles. In addition, the underlying muscles of the face weaken, gravity takes hold, and sagging begins to develop in the mid-face.

This leads to the appearance of jowls and a double chin — even for those in great shape. To achieve to best facelift results, Dr. Mentz will measure, grade, and record the amount of aging or laxity in each area of your face in order to determine the facelift method that will deliver the most effective results for you.

How do I Know Which Facelift Technique is Right for me?

With all the variations of facelift techniques, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for your aesthetic goals. Sometimes people believe they need surgery, but then they don’t — and vice versa. Some individuals aren’t sure if they’re old enough for a facelift, but they have plenty of areas of concern. However, our services aren’t just for those who feel they appear old; they are also designed to maintain and refine youth. You don’t have to look old to want to look younger. If you’re in the Houston area and you’re interested in facial rejuvenation with a facelift, the first step to understanding which one works best for you is to set up a consultation with Dr. Mentz where he can perform a detailed assessment to determine the best facelift procedure for you.

Blending Techniques

This topic, which Dr. Mentz has presented to plastic surgeons at international, national, and state meetings, focuses on his multi-dimensional approach to facial rejuvenation. Dr. Mentz takes an innovative approach of blending both surgical and non-surgical techniques with facelift, including medical grade skincare, laser therapy, cosmetic injectables, and fat grafting to achieve more natural and balanced results. This method attracts patients from all over the world. In addition, to achieve the highest level of rejuvenation and natural-looking results, Dr. Mentz utilizes computer imaging to demonstrate what kind of facelift may be best for a patient, which helps to evaluate their ideal options. Dr. Mentz has consistently found that three options can be determined for each patient, and together with the patient, he will discuss which of these options will maximize the best outcome. This is what makes Dr. Mentz one of the best facelift surgeons in the U.S.

What Procedures can be Combined with a Facelift?

It’s very common for patients to choose to have another procedure in conjunction with their facelift. This can be either surgical or non-surgical, and may include a neck lift, eyelid surgery, an endoscopic brow lift, cell-enriched fat grafting, rhinoplasty, or laser resurfacing. During your consultation with Dr. Mentz, it’s important to discuss all areas of concern and your specific aesthetic goals so that he can properly determine if having another procedure alongside a facelift is right for you.
