What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct what you dislike about your nose, while preserving its cultural characteristics. Because noses look different from background to background (including Asian, African-American, Middle Eastern, Latino, etc.), factors such as skin thickness, bone density, nostril size and placement, and nasal bridge length must be considered when performing this highly customized surgery. As a triple board-certified plastic surgeon who has been a leading expert in aesthetics since 1991, Dr. Mentz is an excellent choice to perform ethnic rhinoplasty. He approaches every procedure with experience, artistry, subtlety, and an eye for maintaining what is most attractive about a patients’ unique nose. Dr. Mentz’s three-dimentional imaging provides powerful guidance and communication, and he will take time with you and your family to find the perfect nose for you.

What can ethnic rhinoplasty accomplish?

  • Improved facial symmetry and balance
  • Correction of structural issues that are causing breathing problems
  • Narrowing and refining the bridge of the nose
  • Lifting the bridge of the nose
  • Narrowing the width of the nostrils
  • Enhancement of the entire face while preserving ethnic nuances

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgical Details

Ethnic rhinoplasty is performed either with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on what will be determined during your consultation. Because of the complex nature and multiple factors that must be considered, most ethnic rhinoplasty surgeries are done using the open approach, in which Dr. Mentz creates a small incision in the skin between the nostrils and the tip of the nose. An ethnic rhinoplasty procedure can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours.

Recovery

After the procedure, your nose will be wrapped with tape, bandages, and perhaps a splint. The initial recovery period from an ethnic rhinoplasty lasts about 7 to 10 days. After this, the majority of patients are able to return to work. During this time, most patients experience swelling, discomfort, bruising, nausea, and/or nasal congestion. Dr. Mentz can prescribe medications to help with these side effects during recovery.

In addition, you’ll need to recline and sleep with your head elevated for two weeks after the procedure. Exercise can usually be resumed after two weeks of recovery. While your results will look better and better each day, final results may take up to 18 months to become fully apparent.

Candidates for Ethnic Rhinoplasty

If you’re in the Houston area and considering undergoing ethnic rhinoplasty with Dr. Mentz, you may be an excellent candidate for this surgery. The best patients for this procedure are those who dislike the appearance of their nose because of:

  • Its size or disproportion with other features
  • The size or width of the nasal bridge
  • A hanging columella
  • The size or placement of the nostrils
  • A prominent nasal bump on the bridge
  • An undefined or downward-pointing nasal tip
