What is MicroPen?

As one of the only FDA-cleared, medical-grade microneedling devices available, MicroPen is a brand-new evolution in skincare that is quickly gaining in popularity. All skin types can benefit from this treatment, which is done quickly and conveniently, with no downtime. MicroPen can be used on essentially any part of the body, including the face, décolletage, neck, abdomen, arms, hands, legs, and back. MicroPen is also incredibly safe, having been clinically tested for safety and efficacy.

How MicroPen works

The MicroPen Evo™ uses 14 tiny stainless steel medical-grade microneedles to penetrate the skin at a depth of two millimeters. This triggers your body’s natural wound-repairing process, which results in the creation of brand-new collagen. The tiny wounds made by the needles will be replaced with healthy new tissue, and over the course of weeks and months, this new collagen helps the skin become smoother, firmer, and more youthful. In addition, the microneedles increase blood flow, which causes new blood vessels to develop. This helps improve acne scars, stretch marks, lines, and wrinkles.

Adding platelet-rich plasma

The best way to boost your MicroPen results is to add platelet-rich plasma to the treatment. When PRP is incorporated into the microneedling, the platelets within the blood—which contains dozens of growth factors—also works to stimulate skin tissue repair and regeneration. Because MicroPen makes thousands of tiny punctures in the skin, it sets the stage for PRP to work incredibly well because the growth factors can reach more deeply into the skin. Both MicroPen and PRP are great treatments on their own, but when combined, their effectiveness is amplified.

What happens during a MicroPen with PRP treatment?

Before treatment, we will draw a small amount of blood from a vein. This blood will be placed into a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma. Once the plasma has been purified, it will be either be injected or topically administered to your skin during the MicroPen treatment. Growth factors from the plasma instantly begin stimulating collagen growth and rejuvenation of collagen cells deep within the skin.

Before the MicroPen process begins, you will be given a topical numbing agent to keep you as comfortable as possible. To help the MicroPen glide more easily over your skin, a gel will be applied to the device, and treatment will begin. The microneedles will pass over the skin (making 1,600 tiny penetrations per second), which patients describe as feeling only like a “small vibration”.

MicroPen vs. Morpheus8

If you’re considering microneedling but aren’t sure whether to opt for MicroPen microneedling or Morpheus8 microneedling, it is helpful to understand that the primary differences between the two treatments. Morpheus8 reaches twice as deep into the dermis as MicroPen and in addition to the microneedle’s rejuvenating effect on the skin, Morpheus8 also emits radiofrequency energy that stimulates collagen and tightens skin.

  • MicroPen microneedling is done with a 12 multi-head needle cartridge that reaches a depth of 2 millimeters and that attaches to a wand that is glided along the treatment area in order to create micro-wounds that cause our body’s natural healing process to kick in and stimulate collagen.
  • Morpheus8 microneedling treatment uses a 24 multi-head needle cartridge that reaches a depth of 4 millimeters and is stamped along the treatment area to create micro-wounds that stimulate the body’s natural healing process and stimulate collagen, while simultaneously emitting radiofrequency energy that further stimulates collagen and tightens the skin.

Recovery and results

For about 24 hours after treatment, your skin will look pink or red. Once you return to your normal color, you will find that you have a beautiful glow that will continue to get better and better over the next several weeks. We typically recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimal results.
